A Total Lunar Eclipse

During a total lunar eclipse, the Moon is completely immersed in Earth's shadow. The above time-lapse photograph shows a lunar eclipse that occurred in April 1993.  The Moon usually does not become completely dark -- in this photo, it has a slight red glow caused by sunlight refracted through the Earth's dusty atmosphere -- but every lunar eclipse is slightly different.

You can find this photo and other exciting images on the Astronomy Picture of the Day web site. Each day a different image or photograph of our fascinating universe is featured, along with a brief explanation written by a professional astronomer.
