Background Science

Farmer Mark's field is a small (10 acre) plot of land located in southwestern Durham County in North Carolina. Typically the field has been used for tobacco, but is currently being used for a variety of straight-to-market crops, such as corn, tomatoes, and pumpkins. The field is bordered by residential areas, most notably by a new elementary school directly to the south. There is considerable concern about stormwater runoff with the increase in construction directly surrounding the field.

The goal of this project is to prepare a study for use in presentation to the local neighborhood association about the stormwater runoff issue, as well as to the local city and county government. It has been decided that a visualization of the field with an eye towards being able to look for overall surface runoff potentials as well as specific areas where water might either accumulate or runoff is useful.

Objectives of the Case Study

The objective of this case study is to prepare a visualization of the field with an analysis of the potential for stormwater runoff.

About the dataset

In this case study, you are presented with an incomplete topographic map of the field, with an incomplete overlay showing elevations (in feet) scored on the map. The goal of this case study is to prepare the dataset and visualize that dataset using the appropriate tool in CLYDE. You need to be able to decide if the data is continuous or discrete, two- or three-dimensional, and how your answer helps you to determine the appropriate CLYDE application to use.

The dataset is available here as a downloadable Excel spreadsheet.
